Fresh Arrests in Syria

Syrian intelligence services launched on Tuesday Jan, 22nd, 2008, a fresh sweep of arrests in Al-Safira neighborhood, arresting thirteen citizens for their Islamic affiliations, said the Syrian Commission for Human Rights in a statement a copy of which was obtained by Ikhwanweb.
                                                                                                 
The detainees included:
 
 
1-Hamza Hajj Hamza A second year student at the Damascus-based Al-Fath institute which is affiliated to Al-Azhar university .
 
2-Hossam Qana”a – A fourth year student at the Faculty of Sharia .
 
3-Mohamed Rahim- a primary stage teacher .
 
4-Barakat Al-Aswad – a pharmacist .
 
5-Mohamed Moaaz Qana”a – A fourth year student at the Faculty of Sharia .
 
The forces that stormed their houses seized also PCs and books owned by the detainees. Some of these detainees have been detained also last summer but the detention period was no more than one single day, said the commission”s statement. Walid Safour, spokesman of the Syrian Commission for Human Rights, called on Syrian authorities to immediately release these detainees and to stop arbitrary detentions. If any one of them has violated law he should be sent to civilian justice and be given full freedom and right to defend himself, Walid added.
Walid also demanded the Syrian regime to give all civilian rights to Syrian people and to allow them give vent to their feelings through an unrestrained freedom of speech.
