European Union Lashes out at Arresting Syrian Riad Seif

The European Union criticized Syrian authorities” detention of Riad Seif, an opposition leader and a founder of Damascus Declaration, along with other opposition figures. The European Union called on Damascus to abide by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in which it is a signatory.


Slovenia, which is undertaking the rotating presidency of the European Union, said in a statement that” The European Union is worried over the detention of 11 persons who are signatories in the abovementioned declaration”, referring to the Damascus Declaration.A cancer patient, Riad Seif was arrested last week on charge of offending the country.


The European Union called on Syria to reconsider cases of prisoners of conscience in a way that meets the universal declaration of human rights in which it was a signatory in 1969. “The European Union calls on Syrian authorities to reopen dialogue with the Syrian civilian society”, said the European Union in its statement.
