Arab leaders gather in Sirte, Jerusalem to dominate their summit

TRIPOLI, — Arab leaders and delegations gathered on Saturday in the Libyan city of Sirte ahead of the Arab summit that will be held under the name of Jerusalem and will address many hot issues in the region especially the dangers threatening the holy city and the Aqsa Mosque.

Israel’s escalating settlement and Judaization activities in the occupied city of Jerusalem will dominate the Arab summit sessions amidst calls from all Palestinian factions for necessarily issuing resolutions supporting the steadfastness of Jerusalemites in the face of the Israeli schemes.

The Palestinian resistance factions in Syria issued a statement demanding the Arab leaders meeting in Libya to withdraw their peace initiative in light of the unprecedented Israeli escalation in Jerusalem.

“The serious developments which the Palestinian and Arab lands are witnessing demand a national stand, cooperation and an effective united Arab position growing up to the challenges faced by our nation in order to confront the dangerous terrorist Zionist practices that affect not only the Palestinian people, but also herald real dangers to all Arab issues,” the statement read.

For his part, Dr. Ahmed Bahar, the first deputy speaker of the Palestinian legislative council (PLC), urged the Arab summit to enforce its previous resolutions on breaking the Israeli blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip and develop a practical approach for the reconstruction of what was destroyed during the war.

In a statement on Friday, Dr. Bahar also called for supporting Jerusalem and the Islamic holy shrines in Palestine politically and financially and taking steps in this regard.

He stressed that the traditional work of all Arab summits previously held and the statements of condemnation or the theoretical promises made by the Arab parties are a betrayal of the Palestinian people and their national cause.
