1206 MB arrests including 7 women in run up to polls

Top Muslim Brotherhood lawyer, Abdel Monem Abdel Maqsoud, stressed that the current clampdown against the group’s candidates and their supporters has noticeably increased during the past few days with a total of 1206 detainees since the group announced it would participate in the elections.

To date, 702 detainees from 22 governorates have been brought before the prosecution. In a press statement Abdul Maqsoud noted that arrests are still under way, adding that up to 8 candidates and 7 women have also been brought in by security forces in a number of governorates.

He highlighted that the regime has revealed its true intentions with an early start to the rigging of elections as MB candidates are being prevented from communicating with the public to present their political platform. The continued hindering and intervention is a clear violation of the constitution which stipulates equal opportunity for all candidates.
