Egyptian Shura Council Elections Phase II Today, Positive Turnout to Complete Democratic Transformation

Today (Tuesday February 14, 2012) and tomorrow, witness the second round of Egyptian Shura Council (SC) elections in 15 constituencies, in 14 provinces, namely: Giza, Suez, Port Said, Ismailia, Sohaj, Minya, Beni Suef, Sharqiya, Qaliubiya, Marsa Matrouh, Kafr Al-Sheikh, Beheira, Aswan and Luxor, in which voting continues over two days.

The Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) has 87 candidates engaged in this election, of whom 60 are on nominee lists, while 27 candidates are racing for ‘individual’ seats.

The party said, in a statement Monday, that the SC is of such constitutional importance that is in no way less than the People’s Assembly, especially as its deputies will participate with elected members of parliament in the selection of the Constituent Assembly members to write the new Constitution.

The FJP called on the Egyptian People, who struck an outstanding example of positive participation during the People’s Assembly elections and the first stage of the SC elections, to continue this positive turnout in the second stage of the SC elections, in order to complete the march of democratic transformation chosen for the transfer of power.
