Dr. Mohamed Morsi, Chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), received on Tuesday, 10 April 2012, Mario Monti, the Prime Minister of Italy, at the FJP’s headquarters in Cairo.

Dr. Morsi discussed the political scene in Egypt during the transition period, the FJP’s views regarding the situation in Egypt under the next government, and ways to bolster political and economic relations between Egypt and Italy.

Dr. Morsi welcomed the Italian Prime Minister’s visit, hailing the strong bilateral relations between Egypt and Italy. He stressed Egypt's sincere appreciation of the Italian role in supporting the democratic transition in Egypt after the revolution and its willingness to support the Egyptian economy in the next phase.

Moreover, Dr. Morsi stressed that the FJP and the Muslim Brotherhood’s decision to field a candidate for the presidential elections came after extensive analyses and discussions within the relevant FJP and Brotherhood institutions, and after reviewing all the developments that occurred in recent months, on both the local and international scenes, and the continuous attempts to subvert or obstruct the march of democratic transition, the clear and utter failure that has become increasingly evident in the performance of the current government, and attempts to disrupt and undermine the Egyptian parliament and its decisions and actions.

Further, Dr. Morsi called on the Italian Prime Minister to support the march of the Egyptian revolution at all levels, especially the economic one, by boosting efforts to attract Italian investments in Egypt, supporting Egyptian exports to the European market, promoting Italian tourism to Egypt, and extending opportunities for economic partnership between Egyptian and Italian companies and establishments in Libya.

At the international level, Dr. Morsi urged Prime Minister Monti to take a positive and decisive stance against violations of the Syrian regime against its own people, praising the Italian posture towards the Syrian revolution and Italy’s withdrawal of its ambassador from Syria.

For his part, the Prime Minister of Italy expressed the Italian government’s respect of the will of the Egyptian people as reflected in the parliamentary elections, as well as the positive performance expected from Egyptians expressing their honest and clear choice for president of Egypt freely in the atmosphere of democracy prevailing in new Egypt after the revolution of 25 January 2011.
