Beltagy: Draft Constitution First Reading Begins Wednesday

Dr. Mohamed Beltagy, Chairman of the Constituent Assembly (CA)’s Committee on Suggestions and Community Dialogue and Secretary-General of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) in Cairo, announced the start of the first full reading of the draft constitution on Wednesday.

In a joint session comprising the CA’s Committee on Suggestions and Community Dialogue and the System of Governance Committee, attended by a number of representatives of various political forces, parties and stakeholders, Beltagy said: "This phase will take several weeks in which we will canvas opinions on the text of the full draft constitution, taking suggestions for additions and modifications".

Beltagy pointed out that it is the right of every citizen to express his or her opinion by suggesting amendment to the full draft text, before reaching the final stage, i.e. the public referendum.

"The first hearing, held on Monday morning, was attended by 22 political parties, some of which refused to attend, and some sent proposals as a matter of duty to participate. We are going through a truly historic moment.”
