The Sinai Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) expressed grave concern over the increasing violations rapidly and deliberately escalating against Sinai civilians, many of which have been documented by SOHR.

SOHR's specialized team that documents extrajudicial killings received a complaint about the killing of a citizen called Suhaib Ibrahim Salem Abu-Maarek, 21, at the hands of coup army soldiers stationed at the Tanak roundabout military checkpoint – south of Rafah, without provocation and in breach of local and international laws and human rights conventions, in April 8, 2016.

Those army troops violated the text of Article 1/6 of the Universal Declaration and the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which states that "1. Every human being has the inherent right to life. This right shall be protected by law. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his life".

As well as Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states that "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person".

SOHR calls on the Egyptian authorities and the security agencies, especially the armed forces, to stop the targeting of civilians in the Sinai, to promptly start an investigation into the latest incident and previous ones, and to bring the perpetrators of all violations and crimes to an urgent trial.

SOHR further calls upon local and international human rights organizations, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial killings, and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Special Committee against torture to intervene immediately to stop the violent policies used by the army against civilians in Sinai.
