2 Students Arrested After Minister of Higher Education’s Al Fayyum University Visit
Immediately after the visit of the Minister of Higher Education to Al Fayyum university, two students were arrested at the gate of university, a few days after two other students were arrested, one of them at the gate of the university and the other from his house just before Iftar (breaking the fasting). Both students were jailed 15 days under investigation .
On Monday morning, Sep, 24th, Motasim Salah Youssef, a third year student at the Faculty of Social Work, and Ramadan Mahmoud Mohamed, a student at the College of Specific Education, were arrested while entering university to attend classes. Officer M A M who is tasked with the file of university and education at the State Security Police service supervised the detentions operation. He even chased astudent at the Faculty of Education using a police car.
This took place only one day after the Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Hani Hilal, paid a visit to Al Fayyum university, where he held an open meeting with university students, in which he highlighted the freedom and independence of the university.
During this open meeting, a student asked the Minister about the phenomenon of arresting Al Fayyum university students, like the detention of student Abdul Rahman Arafa, and student Hisham Mohsen days before the Minister”s visit, the minister denied these rports and said that no students were and will not be arrested.
On Sunday, state security detectives tried to arrest student affiliated to the Faculty of Education while he was in a means of transport going to university and the tried to take him in private car, but he managed to escape.
