20 Teachers Detained After Sharqiyyah Teachers Demo
In a detainment campaign launched by the Egyptian security apparatus following the Sharqiyyah teachers demonstration held today, January 13, 2009, in the afternoon, 20 teachers were detained including Sa”d Lasheen, son of the MB Sharqiyyah Administrative official.
The demonstration included 4,000 teachers, male and female, from Sharqiyyah who had gathered in front of the Teachers Syndicate in Zaqazeeq to protest against the on-going Israeli offensive against Gaza. Earlier ahead, the security had closed the street of the governorate and those surrounding it to prevent the demonstration, but in spite of that, the demonstrators succeeded in organizing the demonstration.
Furthermore, information had been leaked about the intention of security to dispel the demonstration using force. However, the large number of participants unexpected by the security led them to rather detain participants after it ended and as people dispersed.
This campaign has been launched by the Egyptian security in an attempt to suppress demonstrations organized by the MB whether at the mass or professional levels.
