23 Egyptian Rights Agencies Demand Ayman Nour Sentence Eased
23 Egyptian human rights organization called on president Hosni Mubarak to cut the prison sentence against the opposition leader, Ayman Nour, who was sentenced to five years in jail on charge of submitting forged documents for founding Al-Ghad Party that he was leading later in 2005.
The statement released by the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights and 22 other organizations, a copy of which was obtained by Ikhwanweb, pointed out that they call for cutting the sentence on Ayman Nour, a previous presidential runner-up,” because of his deteriorating health “.
The statement pointed out that Nour (41 years), who has recently had a cardiac catheterization procedure, suffered from a rupture of tiny blood vessels inside his eyes causing hemorrhage which may lead to a fibrosis in the optical nerve”.
The human rights organizations considered that the conditions of his prison made him unable to move normally, demanding the attorney general to probe into” the situations inside Torah farm prison, south of Cairo, and know the health condition of Nour lest his life is in danger “.
The 23 organizations demanded president Mubarak to cut the jail sentence against Nour as the Egyptian constitution allows the president to pardon or cut sentences on prisoners.
Nour- a presidential runner up in Sep. 2005, has repeatedly demanded last year to be released for health reasons.
The Egyptian opponent accuses the government of fabricating the case of forging documents of establishing Al-Ghad Party to exclude him from the political life, but the government says that the case is criminal.
