Abu Zuhri: Hamas welcomes European observers at Rafah crossing

Dr. Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman, has said that his movement welcomed the French foreign minister’s proposal regarding European supervision over the Rafah border crossing.

He told the PIC on Monday that as long as Israel will have nothing to do with the issue then the idea is welcomed.

The spokesman recalled that European observers were previously monitoring the traffic on that terminal and Hamas did not object to that.

The idea of searching ships heading to Gaza was still ambiguous, Abu Zuhri said, adding that his movement would respond to that proposal when it is clarified.

He also welcomed the reported visit to Gaza of Amr Mousa, the Arab League secretary general, hoping that it would lead to permanent opening of the Rafah terminal and an Arab declaration on breaking the siege.
