Alexandria University Guard Assault, Beat MB Student

The guard of the Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University, assaulted and brutally beat on Tuesday morning, Nov, 6th, 2007, a Muslim Brotherhood (MB) student at the university gate. The faculty guard chief, Captain Mohamed Atef smashing the student”s glasses and and beat him after he refused to allow them search his own bag. After beating him, the university guard sealed off the gate of the Faculty of Arts and prevented any student from entering or getting out of it.
To add insult to injury, the security gathered many bullies armed with wood bars and white weapons. After this incident, the students organized demonstration in which he called for sacking the guard officer or that he apologize for the assault committed against the student. A group of students wanted to go to the faculty dean but all ways leading to his office were closed. So, they went to the office of the faculty principal who offered the university and faculty”s apology for what the guard officer committed. However, the faculty principal hinted that he does not have any guarantees to protect the students from any future assault, in strong indication to strong grip of security services on Egyptian universities.
These assaults committed by the guard are actually repeated in all Egyptian universities with no reaction from the university administration. These actions against students took place after rigging the student union elections in which all government vetted students were appointed while names of other students were stricken off. Add to this the familiar scene of seeking the help of bullies and the lining up of central security trucks around the university to intimidate students.
