Angry confrontation between Naga’a Hamadi’s deputy and governor.

Qena’s deputy and representative in Parliament Georgette Kelleny called for the removal of Qena’s governor Magdy Ayoub by public Coptic demand. This comes as an aftermath following the sporadic shooting of a number of Copts in Naga’a Hamadi after the Christmas Mass.

Kelleny’s demands were met with extreme opposition by members of the NDP which resulted in the deputy’s abrupt and angry exit. MP’s in the assembly called for the speedy investigation of the incident in an attempt to close the case claiming that the conflicts may escalate even further threatening national unity.

Governor Magdy Ayoub stressed that the case was in fact open and the arrested suspect has previous records where investigations are under way, he hoped that the case would be closed soon to calm the unrest present in Qena. He revealed that interrogations have proved that the suspect has no religious or political ties asserting that the killings were not driven by any trend. In fact the suspect “has psychological problems as a result of financial mishaps which have unfortunately resulted in his shooting spree”.
