Anti-Coup Alliance Statement on Comments by Amnesty International MENA Deputy Director

Anti-Coup Alliance Statement on Comments by Amnesty International MENA Deputy Director

The Anti-Coup, Pro-Legitimacy National Alliance was shocked at the remarks made by Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, in which she claimed alleged human rights violations were committed by supporters of President Morsi against his opponents.

The Alliance reiterated its clear and firm position that it rejects and condemns any violation of human rights whoever the perpetrators and whoever the victims may be, regardless of religion, sex, or political orientation.

The Alliance further reiterates full commitment by its supporters to peacefulness and respect for human rights in all activities, sit-ins and protest marches throughout Egypt.

The Alliance and its supporters demonstrate only in defense of freedom of expression and respect for human rights, which have been repeatedly and brutally violated by the military coup commanders by deposing the elected President, ignoring democratic mechanisms for rotation of power, systematic killings of peaceful demonstrators, arbitrary arrests, torture, suppression of freedoms and fabrication of accusations, in addition to other gross violations of human rights.

The Alliance is also shocked at Ms. Sahraoui’s acceptance of and reliance on testimonies by individuals who are openly hostile to the Alliance and reports issued by the putschists’ Ministry of Interior.

Certainly, Ms. Sahraoui should have verified these allegations by joining or visiting protest vigils, especially in light of the fierce media campaign, orchestrated by the military coup masterminds and their intelligence agencies, to tarnish the image of our peaceful activities.

We trust Amnesty International, with its history and good record, not to support a particular political position or to issue such statements based on dubious witness accounts and without referring to all parties concerned.

These statements are exploited by the putschists’ media to prepare public opinion for further abuses against opponents of the coup which is evidently inconsistent with the mission of Amnesty International.

Once again, we invite Amnesty International and other international human rights organizations to visit the sit-ins, to monitor all our activities and to relay the true picture of our peacefulness and our full support and respect for human rights.

The Alliance also calls for an independent international investigation into everything that is being said regarding violations, including the killing of peaceful demonstrators. All perpetrators must then be brought to fair and prompt trials by the international community.
