Palestinian national conference to be held on 23/1/2008 in Damascus

The chairman of the preparatory committee of the Palestinian national conference, Talal Naji, has announced that the conference would be held in the Syrian capital on 23/1/2008.

Naji, who is also the secretary general of the PFLP-GC, said in a statement that the conference would be held under the slogan “Insisting on national rights of the Palestinian people and national unity the road to liberation and return”.

The Palestinian factions, opposing the settlement process championed by PA chief Mahmoud Abbas, were supposed to hold that conference late November last year to coincide with the Annapolis conference in the USA.

However, the conference was adjourned and is now scheduled to be held in Damascus on 23-24 January 2008.

The statement said that invitations would be extended to all Palestinian factions including the Fatah movement and the chairman and members of the PLO executive committee and the chairmanship of the Palestinian national council.

Abbas had declared his opposition to this conference, claiming that it would only divide the Palestinian people.
