Egyptian state security forces arrested more than 2000 people today in downtown Cairo while on their way to participate in a major demonstration against the Israeli siege of Gaza and the deteriorating humanitarian conditions of millions of Palestinians. The peaceful demonstration was organized by Egyptian opposition and was held at the headquarters of the Bar Association in the heart of Cairo. Police forces used tear gas and electric sticks to disperse protestors. Several members of the parliament were among the demonstrators including those affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood and several indepedents. In his statement to Ikhwanweb, MP Saad Abboud, Al Karama party, stated that security forces surrounded him and four other members violating their immunity as members of parliament. |
