Mohamed Mahdi Akef, chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), denounced the violations practiced by Egyptian security forces after the detentions and seizure of PCs and other belongings in sweeps of arrests the latest of which was Wednesday"s predawn sweep. Akef saw that the security forces, with their the continuous unjustified detention of MB leaders and members, are disrespecting law. He also pointed out that arrest warrants are issued even for those whom the prosecution has released.

"Egyptian security authorities have launched this unfair crackdown in a bid to prevention the Muslim Brotherhood from taking part in the Municipal elections scheduled to be held next April, 8th through arresting any expected Muslim Brotherhood candidate", said Akef in statements to the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera satellite channel. ""Why are we denied our right to take part in these elections to serve this this homeland and our people" he wondered.

Akef called on all the Egyptian people to participates in these elections, pointing out that the MB participation in the elections aims to confront the regime"s tyranny and to serve people who should be supported by well-reputed men.

The MB chairman confirmed that they will deal with the detentions with patience and wisdom to avoid any confrontation even with the harrassments that the group has faced sice it garnered 85 seats in 2005 parliamentary elections.

In a related context, the MB chairman described as illegal and illegitimate the military trials facing 40 MB leaders topped by engineer Khairat Al Shater. The sentencing session will be held next Feb, 26th. "We consider these trials as criminal and we will continue our calls for ending such illegal trials", said Akef.

It is worth mentioning that state security services launched a sweep of arrests of Wednesday at dawn in six governorates in which it arrested 85 MB members ahead of the Municipal elections scheduled to be held next April, 8th, 2008
