Khalil Anani: MB Boycott Annulls Elections

Khaleel Al-Anani, political researcher at Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, stressed that the MB boycott of the local elections was a wise, right, and on-time decision. It robbed elections of legitimacy, he said.

“The MB disclosed the tyrannical government practices against opposition. Boycott is abandoning a constitutional right, but it was essential to embarrass the regime.”

He added that any observer of the vote could figure out the lack of real competition. However, the MB managed through their strong media campaign to expose the regime’s violations, he said.

In the same context, MB chairman, Muhammad Mahdi Akef, defended the group’s decision to boycott elections accusing the regime of autocracy and denying other political and national forces the opportunity to run, to facilitate inheritance of power.

“We have obtained more than 600 judicial decisions annulling elections and 6000 giving our candidates right to register. However, the government did not execute any of these. We would like to inform the people that these elections are nul, and that we will continue our legal struggle until court rulings are respected,” he said in an interview with Alarabiya.net.

The regime feared another victory for the MB after we won 20% of seats in the People’s Assembly in 2005 elections, he said.
