Analysts: Strikes are Outputs of Gov’t Siege on Political Freedom

During the political seminar of MB parliamentary bloc on Tuesday April 22, titled “Strikes between Chaos and Influence”, all attendees stressed the importance of continuing recent strikes that began to prevail during the last two years, but in a peaceful manner. They warned against turning them to chaotic destructive riots that would be used as a plea for further freedom- restricting laws and procedures.

In his speech, Amr Al-Shoubaki (expert at Al-Ahram Center for Strategic and Political Studies) has hailed the MB’s refusal to participate in the general strike, but criticized some MB leaders for not participating in certain groups strikes, such as the University Professors Strike.

He added that he refuses the intervention of political forces directly in such strikes and expected that strike will prevail due to governmental failure and economic stagnation.

Shoubaki stated that the governmental siege of political parties and movements and tyrannizing the MB through arrests and recent military tribunals helped to create such strikes and demos.

He warned against fatal consequences of such policies. “Weakening these entities often has catastrophic results and lead to uncontrollable spontaneous reactions, such as what happened in Al-Mahalla where the wrath of the people negatively led them to react that way.”

Al-Shoubaki added that he expects three scenarios for strikes: first, the emergence of a new generation of leaders from workers that help enrich political life. Second, pressures on the regime will force it to change its political course due to the new equations on the ground. Third, social protests may turn into organised forms of civil disobedience.
