Brotherhood MP Criticizes Delivering Egypt Natural Gas to Israel before Cairo Districts

Mahmoud Megahed (member of Muslim Brotherhood Parliamentary Bloc) denounced exporting natural gas to the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) and other European countries while failing to deliver it to Cairo densely-populated districts like Matariyah, Ain Shams.

In his urgent query submitted to the Minister of Petroleum, Megahed stated that Matariyah’s residents have been expecting natural gas to reach them for many years as was previously declared by the government. However, nothing reached them. “It seems that the Egyptian government is closer to the IOF than the Egyptian people,” he said in a parliament session Monday.

He called on the government to stop exporting gas to Israel, because it is against the Egyptian national security. He demanded the government to immediately supply Matariyah and other neighborhoods in Egypt with natural gas.

It is worthy mentioning that Al-Azhar Scholars Front has issued a statement urging those working at the factories exporting natural gas to Israel to stop participation in such a “moral crime.”

“We should not take part in a work that threatens our national security,” the statement told workers.

On the other hand, Israeli Ambal Company has recently declared its profits from natural gas for the first quarter in 2008 saying that they reached $128.7 million, while the same company gained no more than $1.1 million last year.

The company said that the cause for such big profit is the transportation of Egypt”s low-price natural gas through a pipe line in which the company owns certain shares. The line goes from Egyptian city of Al-Arish to the Palestinian Asqalan.
