Kafr El-Sheikh Farmers Protest Against Cumulative Taxes

A group of farmers from Shalma town in Kafr El-Sheikh organized a strike yesterday in front of the Ministry of Finance in Nasr City to protest against the imposed cumulative taxes on their lands which they owned since 1976.

One of the farmers, Mahmoud Salem, told Ikhwan Online, “Last year, we were surprised when our governor imposed taxes on our lands for all the years they had been in our possession. We were asked to pay 500 pounds per acre, which is a very high amount considering our modest income.”

Salem added, “When we opposed this oppressive decision made by the Tax Services and Ministry of Finance, the Minister of Finance told us that it was our governor”s decision, and that he was the only one who had the authority to cancel it.  So we went back to our governor and after long negotiations he agreed to cancel the cumulative taxes provided that the Minister of Finance approves.”

In a similar context, students of the Exchange Institute cancelled their protest which was to be held yesterday morning in front of the Ministry of Finance to protest against the Ministry”s decision to end appointing them in the Ministry.

In spite of the strike”s cancellation, a large number of security forces had gathered around the Ministry of Finance during the early morning hours yesterday as a cautionary measure.
