John Ging, the director of UNRWA operations in the Gaza Strip, on Saturday called on the UN Secretary General, the EU commissioner and world officials to pressure Israel into ending its collective punishment against the civilian population of the Gaza Strip.

Ging, during a meeting at the UNRWA office with MP Jamal Al-Khudari the head of the anti siege committee in Gaza, said that he was not only demanding allowing entry of food assistance but rather the opening of all Gaza crossings in order to return life to normalcy in the Strip similar to what it used to be before imposing the siege.

The UNRWA official described the IOA measures against Gaza as "serious", and added that Israel did not respect the calm agreement signed with Gaza five months ago.

He charged that the IOA refused to allow UNRWA assistance material to pass through the closed Gaza crossings for 12 days, noting that all UNRWA projects in Gaza were also suspended because of the IOA refusal to allow entry of raw material.

Ging wondered why the IOA was punishing Gaza, saying if the reason was the general elections then 50% of the Gaza population is children and they did not take part in those elections so why punish them.

For his part, Khudari said that the Gaza crossings should be spared actions and reactions, pointing out that the crossings were found to facilitate life of citizens and not vice versa.

He stressed that the IOA should not exploit the crossings as a pressure card on the Palestinians and should not be in control of the sustenance of one and a half million Palestinians in the Strip.
