In a press statement to Ikhwanweb, MB MP Sa"d Khalifa accused the Egyptian government, particularly Telecommunications and Interior Ministers, of failing to respect the Egyptian constitution and human rights by tapping citizens" phone lines.

"The government is violating Article 45 of the Egyptian Constitution stipulating respect of citizens" right to privacy which is protected by law including mail, telegrams, and phone calls which should not be overheard or overseen except by judicial order and according to the provisions of law," Khalifa added.

This came in response to Telecommunication Minister Dr. Tarek Kamel"s response in a meeting with the Cairo Royal Rotary Club when asked about the government"s wire-tapping citizens" phone lines, "There are 40 million mobile phones in addition to land phones and we allow security to wire-tap phones to protect investments."

Khalifa questioned, "How can a member of the government be permitted to make such a statement not even considering the saying, "if you"ve been tried with faults, conceal them." Moreover, is spying even permissible?  And does it include all the Ministers and officials including the Parliament Head?! And how can the citizen protect himself from it?"
