Tabler: Mitchell Should Discuss Rule of Law in Damascus

Middle East envoy George Mitchell arrives in Damascus today to discuss Israeli-Syrian peace and lay the groundwork for future U.S.-Syrian relations. Among the steps to a renewal of diplomatic relations, says former President Jimmy Carter, is a lifting of sanctions against Syria.

Andrew Tabler at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy suggests that this is an opportunity to not only address the peace process, but also to promote rule of law and reform, which will underpin long term cooperation between the U.S. and Syria.  Thus far, he notes, progress on re-engagement has been slowed by Syria’s covert nuclear program, support for Hamas and Hezbollah, and its involvement in Lebanese affairs.
