Speaker Dweik meets with Abbas to discus Palestinian files

Dr. Aziz Dweik, the Palestinian legislative council (PLC) speaker, held Tuesday afternoon a meeting with ex-PA chief Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah during which they explored ways of re-activating the PLC’s work and discussed the national reconciliation file.

In a statement to the PIC following the meeting, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Ramahi, the secretary-general of the PLC, described the atmosphere of the meeting as positive, noting that discussions tackled all issues in the Palestinian arena.

Dr. Ramahi said that the Palestinian leaders talked about the initiation of contacts with all parliamentary blocs to hold a meeting in order to create a joint vision for the reactivation of the PLC.

He pointed out that Abbas acknowledged the legitimacy of the PLC speaker and presidency, adding that the meeting was held on this basis.

The lawmaker also said that Dr. Dweik raised the issue of political arrests and stressed the need for closing this file in order to create the climate for the success of the national dialog.

In another context, the international campaign for the release of kidnapped lawmakers will hold Wednesday morning a sit-in in solidarity with Palestinian MPs imprisoned in Israeli jails outside the bombed headquarters of the PLC.

This sit-in comes in the context of a series of activities organized by the Hamas change and reform parliamentary bloc in cooperation with several local and external parties with the aim of introducing the issue of Palestinian lawmakers kidnapped by Israel and exposing its violations against them.

The international campaign has invited official and popular parties to participate in the picket which will be held at 11 o’clock in the morning.
