Dr. Gamal Abdel Salam was released following his detention for 5 months without charges. This comes in the context of continued waves of arrests in Egypt of members and leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood. Alkarama submitted the cases of 112 Muslim Brotherhood detainees to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention on 1 November 2009.
Dr. Abdel Salam had previously been arrested three times by State Security Investigative (SSI) forces between 2007 and 2009 - his most recent arrest took place on 28 June 2009.

Sources indicate that his appeal was accepted and that the State Security Prosecution authorized his release. Alkarama continues to follow the cases of members of the Muslim Brotherhood who remain detained in various prisons across Egypt.
