The ambassador confirmed that his country respects the Egyptian domestic affairs. He also defended his country’s attitude in Iraq and rejected notions that it ignited any sectarian strife.

Ricciardone said in Rotary Heliopolis seminar on Monday:” We have no relation with the so-called outlawed group. We hold dialogues with independent and opposition MPs due to their posts, not because of their affiliations.

Asked about the US pressure to release Ayman Nour, Mr. ambassador stated the US intervention in the case of Ayman Nour, former Ghad Party leader, was out of sympathy to his health conditions and was not an intervention in the Egyptian domestic affairs as was reported.

Commenting on the documentary aired by Israeli channel one, covering the massacre of brutally killing Egyptian POWs after the end of the 1967 war, by soldiers of Shakid military unit led by the current Israeli Minister of Infrastructure Beniamin Ben Eliezer, Ricciardone pointed out that he did not watch the documentary, but read about the case in newspapers. He described the incident as "historical" and that there is a fierce debate over it in Israel.

Ricciardone added that Iran’s possession of nuclear weapons is a threat to all countries of the region, including Egypt, pointing out that Iran has the right to possess peaceful nuclear programs, not a uranium enrichment project which is the first step towards making nuclear weapons.

He confirmed that his country is committed to a peaceful solution for the Iranian issue, citing the North Korean problem, which was solved after years of efforts and help from many friendly countries.

The US ambassador acknowledged that his country committed many mistakes in Iraq, saying "We admit that the Iraqis are still facing tough and inhumane conditions; we are committed to support this nation and establish a stable country and a government that represents all sects"

“We have never been a part of Iraq’s problems; for example, we did not make sectarianism there because we do not know the difference between Sunnis and Shiites’ he concluded.
