Cairo Criminal Court acquitted last Sunday 18 Muslim Brotherhood members and leaders from Sharqiya; the MB members were detained in prisons of Wadi Al-Natrun and Burj Al-Arab according to arrest warrants the Interior Ministry issued more than 6 weeks ago.

The Egyptian court upheld the appeal lodged by the Muslim Brotherhood members and issued a ruling of immediately releasing them after 15 days unless Interior Ministry challenges the ruling or issues another arrest warrant; in case of challenging the court ruling, another appeal can be filed a month later .

The released MB members are :

First Wadi Al-Natrun detainees :

1- Dr. Mohamed Abdul Ghani - an opthalmology professor at Zagazig University and a Muslim Brotherhood leader and a member in the group’s political committee. Dr. Mohamed is the older brother of Ayman Abdul Ghani who is married to daughter of the MB second deputy chairman and currently detained as part of recent arrest campaign that included 140 of the Muslim Brotherhood’s members and students.

He was arrested three times before this, the latest of which was last June as he was jailed for two months pending trial and he was arrested in January 2005 for six months; also, he was jailed for three years on the court-martials against hundreds of MB members in 1995.

2-Mr. Abdullah Al- Zahawi– a MB leader in the governorate and a manager at The Ministry of Youth and Sports.

3-Mr. Abdullah Al Bahrawi - (Lawyer and ex-member in the Bar syndicate in Sharqiya).
4- Mohamed Naguib Abdul Ghani Ibrahim- General Manager of the legal affairs in the West Zagazig Education District.
5-Ashraf Al-Baghdadi - Employee in the Authority of Electricity.
6-Hassan Othman - French language teacher
7-Eng. Mohamed Ezzat – Owner of an engineering company.
8-Abdul Hamid Ahmed Abdou - Accountant in the Agricultural Authority in Zagazig.
9-Maher Abdul Latif - an employee in a contracting company
10-Tamer Sobhi Nasruddin - Student in the Faculty of Education, Arabic Dep.
11-Dr. Mohamed Lotfi – Pharmacist, Muslim Brotherhood leader in the city of Fakous.
12-Gamal Salem- Secondary Stage Math Teacher in Fakous
13-Mohamed Habib- Lawyer

Second Burj Al-Arab detainees:

1- Al Sayed Al Sayed Ahmed Salem - Primary school teacher in Suffiya institute
2-Ali Abdul Raouf Ismail- Employee at the Ministry of Awqaf (Endowments)
3- Al Shabrawi Mohamed Al Shabrway - Physician
4-Talaat Salahuddin Hussein - Agriculture Diploma
5- Bahaa Mohamed Abdul Aal - Health technical institute

It’s worth mentioning that other appeals will be lodged for releasing other MB detainees on Tuesday and Wednesday before Cairo criminal court.

For his part, lawyer Mostafa Al Demeiri considered it a good step that confirms the fairness of the Egyptian judiciary.

Al Demeiri pointed out that problem lies in implementing the ruling by the Ministry of Interior which is used to issuing other arrest warrants against those released by court in a flagrant disrespect to judicial rulings, like the arrest warrant against eng. Khairat Al Shater and fellow detainees in addition to many other cases.
