Egypt’s Mubarak, Libya’s Gaddafi talk peace

CAIRO: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Libya leader Colonel Muamar Gaddafi met on Wednesday at the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh to discuss peace efforts and efforts to resolve Palestinian and Israeli stalled peace negotiations. The Egyptian state run MENA news agency reported the two leaders talked on a number of other issues, including the recent Sudanese elections and the violence that followed.

According to the Egyptian foreign ministry, the leaders’ talk also touched on the recent development in the “Arab and African arenas,” and in particular the political turmoil in Sudan. MENA did not elaborate further on the discussions.

Mubarak has been in the Red Sea resort since returning to the country after having surgery in Germany. A number of rumors have circulated over the President’s health, but a meeting with ministers earlier this month and Gaddafi’s visit are likely to allay fears in the country.

Government-run media in Egypt added that Gaddafi congratulated Mubarak on his recovery from gall bladder surgery and his return to Egypt.

According to the reports, the two discussed means of strengthening ties between their neighboring countries.

Both nations have seen American business interests rise in the past few months with high-profile visits from US trade representatives.
