Malta officially protested to Israel over the injury of one of its citizens in the Gaza Strip at the hands of the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) while participating in a peaceful demonstration against the security buffer zone.

Maltese foreign minister Tonio Borg is expected to raise the issue during a meeting for the foreign ministers of the European Union on Monday.

The Maltese foreign ministry said in a statement that it "deplores and condemns in the strongest possible terms the shooting of Maltese national Bianca Zammit" at the hands of the IOF troops on Saturday.

The statement said that a protest memo was sent to the Israeli government via the Maltese embassy, adding that the attack was "totally unwarranted" and called for an investigation into the incident that took place near a refuge camp.

Zammit, 28, a pro-Palestinian activist, is being treated at the Al-Aqsa hospital after she was shot in the leg during a protest near the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in Deir Al-Balah, central Gaza. A bullet went through a muscle in one of her legs but missed the bone.
