Four African countries on Friday signed a new treaty for the sharing of the Nile waters despite notable absence and opposition from the largest sharers, Egypt and Sudan .

Both countries argued that their water supply will be severely reduced if the seven other Nile users divert the river with domestic irrigation and hydropower projects

 

According to sources, Rwanda , Ethiopia , Uganda and Tanzania signed the new outline while Kenya issued a support statement and Congo and Burundi were absent

 

Marc Franco, who heads the European Union delegation in Egypt , issued an appeal urging the seven African countries to settle differences with Egypt and Sudan stressing that differences will only escalate if there are no compromises

 

The agreement will replace a 1959 accord between Egypt and Sudan which gives them control of more than 90 percent of the water flow. Cairo under Mubarak's rule, could exercise the veto power it was given by a 1929 colonial-era treaty with Britain
