UK study finds widespread corruption in Egypt
The UK based Oxfam organization and semi-official Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies released a new report determining that official corruption has become widespread in Egypt.
Tuesday, July 6,2010 15:10

The study maintained that there was evidence of dishonesty and fraud at all levels ranging from junior officials to ministers and members of parliament

The report, confirmed that despite the forming of special committees organized to combat corruption it continues to permeate most official institutions. According to the report  the absence of law and the excessive power of the executive authority over the legislative branch of government; and the combination of political power and wealth are behind the extensive corruption

The report concluded with calls for Article 76 of Egypt's constitution to be modified. It maintained however that the article has played a role in regulating the relation between the presidential authority and the public. Nevertheless it also criticized the repeated meddling in national elections by the Interior Ministry with the latest incident in the midterm Shura elections which were held in early June. Irregularities were evident during the procedure with efforts by the security apparatus to thwart the campaigns of candidates from political opposition mainly the Muslim Brotherhood who had fielded 15 candidates but were unable to secure seats because of irregularities and rigging
