According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Centre nearly one in five Americans incorrectly believe that US President Barak Obama is a Muslim

The view that he is a Muslim is increasingly widespread among his political right winged opponents than among his backers

The rumour has mostly been believed and spread among the conservative Republicans, and a number of independents as opposed to only a few Democrats

Right-wing media has been notably and relentlessly promoting the myth that Obama is a Muslim. Especially during the last two years the media has continued to lie about Obama's personal life, dishonestly distorting his faith to claim that he is in fact a Muslim and not a Christian. In one instant there were dubious claim that Obama admitted "I am a Muslim." Conservatives pushed the unsupported claim that Obama admitted to Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit that he is a Muslim, where some reported it as confirming suspicions while  Washington Times op-ed, Jeffrey Kuhner previously wrote that Obama is "betraying the Jews" and that he "is a cultural Muslim whose sympathies lie with the Islamic world in its life-death struggle against Israel."

Conservatives have demonstrated paranoid Islamophobic tendencies leaving no room for facts going as far as seeing Islamic symbols in Obama administration logos. The Fox News and conservative media alleged that the official logo of the Nuclear Security Summit "looks like" an Islamic crescent. However, the ludicrous assertions were brushed aside by Comedy Central's Jon Stewart who noted, that "the inspiration for the logo is actually the Rutherford-Bohr Model of the atom that we all learned about in high school."

In response to the continued fabricated allegations by the right wing, white house advisor Joshua Dubois maintained that despite the intent accusations and falsehoods on the President's beliefs the President has been diligent and personally committed to his own Christian faith. However the rumour may have evolved and increased after his decision to support the construction of the controversial "Ground Zero Mosque".
