A recent survey in the US revealed that the majority of American people did not oppose the idea of any fundamentalist Islamic group assuming power in any Middle East Muslim country so long as it was done through democratic elections.

The report published by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs is regarded a powerful and significant response to the lobby's forces and political organizations in Washington, revealing that the lengthy report on Americans' attitudes on foreign policy indicated that 68 per cent of Americans, did not oppose the arrival of Islamic rule in the Arab world.

The report said: "A large majority believed the United States must succumb to the Arab peoples' choices concerning their leader regardless of whatever trend the people choose to vote for.

According to the survey which included the opinions of over 2500 people, 25 per cent believed that the US administration should promote democracy in the Middle East and allow the people to choose without US intervention as opposed to 5 per cent who feared democracy in the event that the Arabs choose Islamists as leaders.

This came in the last major 90 page report from the Commission entitled "International Trends for 2010 - limited international involvement," which included results of studies on the opinions of Americans on several related issues.

Surprisingly 59% of Arabs and Muslims in Egypt , Syria and Saudi Arabia who participated in the poll believed that the US administration should steer clear from intervening and pressuring the Arab states to practice democratic rule.

The report's results demonstrated the American people's opposing viewpoint on the various U.S. administrations attempts to intervene in the affairs of the Middle East

Expert on US affairs Emad Mikki alleged that the results were a strong wake up call to right-winged Israeli and US organizations of the Americans wish that the US back down and not interfere in other country's affairs.
