The US based Human Rights released its annual report for 2010, accusing Egypt of widespread discrimination against Christians and other religious minorities.

The report revealed escalating repression of political dissent. Calls by the West to protect Egypt's minorities have been fiercely rejected by President Hosni Mubarak where he described them as interference in domestic affairs.

The report cited that:

"Although Egypt's constitution provides for equal rights without regard to religion, there is widespread discrimination against Egyptian Christians, as well as official intolerance of heterodox Muslim sects...The government continues to refuse to disclose the number of persons detained under the emergency law, but Egyptian human rights organizations estimate the number at around 5,000"

The HRW's report also highlighted Egyptian security heavy-handedness, criticizing the continuance of the emergency law and its treatment of refugees and migrants.
