Egypt: Keeping State Security ,Allowing Police officers To Demonstrate And Rewarding Them Then Warning Workers of Demonstrating Is A Significant Setback of The Pro- Democracy Movement That Must be Corrected

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information said today that the warnings of the Supreme Council of the forces of military and religious leaders to the workers and urging them to halt demonstrations and labor strikes, while allowing police to demonstrate and rewarding them, as well as the continued retention of the state security apparatus, despite the popular desire to dissolve such a repressive apparatus, represents a major setback of the pro-democracy movement in Egypt, as it deprives the biggest social class of claiming their rights and their freedom to express their legitimate demands.

The Minister of the Interior in the government of Ahmed Shafik appointed by the deposed dictator Hosni Mubarak met with officers and police staff who demonstrated on 13/2/2011, and decided a 100% incentive increment for all police force as well promote under officers to officers . The minister also called back all police staff expelled for administrative irregularities back to service. On the other hand the minister issued no decision of investigation with those who participated in killing and suppressing pro-democracy demonstrators.

The Supreme Military Council did not react the least when police staff demonstrated , however when workers started demonstrations in support of the revolution and to claim their rights, many religious leaders and some state owned newspapers which are still run by members of the National Democratic Party started denouncing the labor strikes and demonstrations, claiming that peaceful legitimate strikes and demonstrations threaten stability in Egypt.

The Arabic Network said “Stability , for those who allege they seek stability, will be only achieved by democracy . Democracy cannot be sought by suppressing social classes and depriving citizens from expressing their opinions and demands”.

“Warning of labor strikes and at the same time rewarding police staff and ignoring the public demand to dissolve the state security service, is a setback of the revolution against injustice, corruption and repression .

No one has the right to rob the Egyptian revolution of one of its most important demands : change, freedom, social justice “ , added the Arabic Network.
