Egypt's public prosecutor charged ex-Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and other officials with aiding the murder and the attempted murder of hundreds of protesters during the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak and his regime.

The charges, which are a welcome change, are the first move by Egypt's military-appointed provisional government to hold former officials accountable for the killings of over 300 demonstrators during the mass protests that began January 25.

The charges are a contrast where during Mubarak's reign, the Interior Ministry aided by the security apparatus were given a free hand to deal with citizens as they pleased.

According to top prosecutor Abdul Magid Mahmoud, al-Adly, who is currently in prison on other charges, as well as the heads of the state, and the public and central security agencies encouraged the killing of protesters during the uprising. Other officials and police officers and policemen from other governorates were also charged.

In a press statement Mahmoud noted that the former senior officials killed and wounded a number of citizens as they were protesting peacefully. A date for the hearing is still to be set.

Related, Egypt's military rulers approved constitutional amendments that were adopted in a nationwide referendum, easing the way for parliamentary and presidential elections to be scheduled within months.
