Following the January 25 People’s revolution the surfacing of Salafi groups who have normally kept away from politics has been witnessed with clear intentions of becoming involved in the political arena.

Despite former scoldings describing the protestors as disbelievers for disobeying authorities Salafist groups are now  calling for the drafting of laws based on the Quran and the Prophet Mohamed’s teachings.

According to the head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, Dr. Yousef Qaradawi the Salafists demands are both stagnant and extreme adhering to literal interpretations of the Quran and tradition.

He asserted that religious decrees should change to accommodate new issues and not be confined to the interpretations contributed by scholars from past eras.

In turn the prominent scholar praised the Muslim Brotherhood movement which demonstrated tolerance stressing it wanted a civil state based on the religious teachings of Islam offering equality and freedom to all regardless of political trends, religion, colour or creed.
