Deeming it safer prosecutors questioned Alaa and Gamal Mubarak, sons of the deposed Mubarak, inside the Tora prison premises, where they are detained.

According to the attorney general the measure was decided on after the interior minister reported that it would not be safe to move them outside the prison.

The brothers faced accusations including forced business partnerships they made with foreign multinationals trying to enter the Egyptian market. They were also questioned about the privatization of public sector companies and in evaluating and selling the assets of those companies.

Other probings included their relationships with a company in UK and another in Cyprus working on the management of illegal investment funds. Over the last few decades the Mediterranean island has become a haven for money-laundering operations and offshore companies wishing to evade paying taxes in their home country.

According to An Ahram Online investigative report Mubarak’s sons have large business stakes in Bullion Company Ltd which runs a handful of investment funds, including Egypt’s EFG-Hermes.

The prosecution stated that the public will be informed of all the facts that have taken place, however there will be discretion to preserve the confidentiality of investigations and of evidence collection.

Gamal and Alaa Mubarak are still to be remanded in custody for 15 days, pending further investigation into charges of corruption levelled against them.
