Contemplating options the Muslim Brotherhood is currently exploring the group’s legal status. The group which was ‘banned’ during the Mubarak regime is to decide if it should become a civil society organization.

Contemplating options the Muslim Brotherhood is currently exploring the group’s legal status.  The group which was ‘banned’ during the Mubarak regime is to decide if it should become a civil society organization.

According to Karem Radwan, a member of the MB’s Shura Council, a legal committee is currently considering suggestions regarding the Brotherhood's legal status.

Former MB MP Mohamed Gamal Heshmat and Shura Council member added that the legal status of the Brotherhood will be examined after its political party, the Freedom and Justice Party, has been established he maintained that the MB may become an NGO; however no definite decision has yet been made.

Top MB lawyer Abdel Monem Abdel Maqsoud, confirmed that the group is awaiting the new law on NGOs, expected to be issued after the parliamentary elections.

He added another option is to implement the ruling issued in 1992 which had dismissed a case that called for the dissolution of the Brotherhood. If this were to happen the MB would return to its former legal status of 1928.
