Newly Formed Egyptian Bloc to Compete in Elections, FJP Welcomes

14 political parties, including a Sufi party and labor unions, announced the formation of "The Egyptian Bloc" to coordinate during the upcoming parliamentary elections. This announcement came during a meeting on Monday, August 15 at the Egyptian Journalists’ Syndicate in Cairo.

The parties decided to compete in the upcoming parliamentary elections as a single bloc, denying it is an elite grouping not pervasive in the Egyptian political street.

The "Egyptian Bloc" includes several prominent Egyptian parties such as the Egyptian Democratic Front Party, the Egyptian Social Democratic Party, the Free Egyptians Party, the Free Egypt Party, the Tagammu Party, the Awareness Party, the Tahrir Sufi Party, the Egyptian Communist Party as well as the Farmers Syndicate, the Popular Worker’s Union, the National Association for Change and the National Council.

Egyptian Bloc is now Egypt’s second largest political coalition after the Democractic Alliance for Egypt, which includes 34 parties, among them: Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) and Al-Wafd Party, are part of a political alliance titled the "Democratic Alliance for Egypt". This coalition – that was configured some months ago – is looking forward to compete in the upcoming elections and to advocate national consensus.

Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) Secretary General in Cairo Dr. Mohamed Beltagy welcomed the Egyptian bloc. Speaking to Ikhwanweb, Beltagy asserted that the political arena is open for all Egyptians to propose their political agendas to transition Egypt into secure and stable era so long as it adheres to respecting the will of the people regardless of outcome.

Saad Aboud, leader in the Karama Party, stated that he had hoped that all parties would share a joint electoral list, adding that such a division was not necessary and it might lead to further splintering of the nations’ unity.  However, Aboud stated all parties are obliged to respect all other factions and are committed to doing the best for Egypt and respect the will of the people in the upcoming elections.
