A frenzy of dismissal and summoning to disciplinary boards hit the Egyptian universities in response to the success of the experience of the Free Students Union that had a considerable influence on the Egyptian society and media. After dismissing some Free Union students in Al-Azhar University and referring others to disciplinary boards, Cairo and Helwan universities followed this example. In Cairo University, 10 students from the Faculty of Agriculture were dismissed for two weeks starting from 5/ 12/2006 to 20/12/2006 during which the oral and practical exams of these students will be held; this means that they may be denied access to exams that have already started during these days. This was due to the administrative investigation no. 100 of the year 2006 that was held with 17 collage students who participated in the Free Union, on charge of spreading among students and calling for participating in the Free Union; 10 of them were dismissed, while seven haven’t been informed yet of the result of the investigation. The dismissed students are: Abdul Rahman Ahmed Abdou Shaboun, fourth grade, Ahmed Salah Mohamed Abdul Baqi, Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Kamal, Bahaa Al Shahat Abdul Ati- third grade, Moaaz Hussein Al-Darag, Mohamed Samir Youssef, Hamdi Mohamed Kamel- second grade- Ahmed Hanafi, Ahmed Kamel and Mahmoud Sobhi- first grade. Also, three other students were dismissed for two weeks following the administrative investigation no. 98 of the year 2006 AD, on charge of hanging posters of the timetable of the Free Union election; the students are: Abdul Rahman Ahmed Abdou Shaboun, Mohamed Abul Abbas Farag and Lotfi Rajab Adel Hamdan. On the other hand, Ahmed Salah Mohamed Abdul Baqi, Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Kamal, Bahaa Al Shahat Abdul Ati faced another investigation on charge of distributing leaflets and hanging posters of the secretary-general and deputy secretary general of the university’s Free Union!. In the Faculty of Arts, four students were dismissed for two weeks on charge of participating in the Free Union: Mohamed Said Fahmi " the assistant secretary general of the Free Union in the faculty" and Mahmoud Said Abul Qasem and Mahmoud Awad Salama- fourth grade, and Amr Mansour Imam- third grade. Also, warnings were sent five others: Ahmed Yaqout, Islam Mohamed, Taha Abdul Naeem Al Bayyoumi- third grade, on charge of hanging posters that read " Islam is the solution!." As for Ahmed Samir Al Nasharti and Mahmoud Atef Anwar- second grade, they were charged of hanging posters that read " Resist… to be", the slogan of the campaign that the MB students launched this year. In the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, 23 of the students faced investigations and 20 students of them faced disciplinary actions on charge of participating in and winning the elections of the Free Union: Hamada Fathi, Rabih Ismail, Hazem Mohamed Ibrahim, Bahaa Ahmed Abdul Rahman- fifth grade, and Ahmed Rashad Abdul Samie " the secretary general of the Free Student Union in the faculty " he faces two investigations" and Hadi Ahmed Salah "Kifaya Movement member" and the assistant Secretary General in the faculty and the Secretary general of the Free Union in the university" and Mahmoud Mohamed Al Mahdi and Mohamed Hatem- fourth grade- Gamal Mostafa Mohamed " three investigations " and Ahmed Heidar Al-Gamal, Ahmed Naim and Ahmed Gharib- third grade and Ahmed Abdul Fadil, Ahmed Mahmoud Hussein and Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed Harb " he faces two investigations " and Maher Mohamed Al Taher- second grade. Hani Mohamed Al Mahdi " he faces two investigations " and Mohamed Osama, Ali Magdi and Mohamed Fawzi- first grade. In the Faculty of Dar Al-Ulum, 21 students were referred to investigations on charge of calling on students to participate in the elections of the free union, and making ballot boxes and elections inside the faculty!. In the Faculty of Commerce, four students were referred to disciplinary boards: Ahmed Mamdouh and Omar Gamal " the assistant secretary general of the free student union in the Faculty " and Said Mohamed Said and Yasser Mahfouz, on charge of participating in the free student union!. Also, nine students, including four female students, were referred to investigations: Sara Arabi Hosni, Sayyeda Masbih, Israa Imam, Shaimaa Ahmed Mahmoud, Abdul Rahman Ezzat, Abdul Hamid Hosni, Ali Barakat, Abd AlRahman Mamdouh, Ahmed Sami, on charge of participating in the free union!. He confirmed that what is happening proves that the blatant security intervention in the university affairs still continues and it aims at exercising pressures on and intimidating students to prevent them from exercising their legitimate student rights . Azmi pointed out that all these investigations aim also to constitute an argument in the future for the university administration when it strikes off students in the elections of the student union over the next two years as it can resort to the fact that they were referred to disciplinary boards and faced sanctions. As for Helwan University, 20 students of the Faculty of Commerce were referred to disciplinary boards after investigating with them on charge of participating in the free union. The university administration had referred- more than two weeks ago- about 42 students to investigation on charge of participating in the union in various faculties in the university including detained students from the Faculty of Commerce; the results of these investigations haven’t been announced so far. While the Commerce Faculty students were sent to disciplinary boards. Abdul Aziz Mogahed Amin- the previous secretary general of the free union in the university and one of those facing investigations, said: the faculty board refuses to tell us the names of those referred to disciplinary boards, and this is kept secret in a suspicious way!; this may indicate that these disciplinary boards will be near or amid the exams, something that may put the students future at stake. |
