Beltagy: ElBaradei’s Withdrawal From Presidential Race Bad For the Country

Dr. Mohamed Beltagy, member of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) Executive Office and the party’s secretary in Cairo, said that the withdrawal of Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei from the presidential election deducts from the vitality and effectiveness of both the electoral arena and the Revolutionary scene.

Dr. Beltagy also said, in his comments on the withdrawal: "We may agree or disagree with Dr. ElBaradei’s views and positions; but certainly – as a potential presidential candidate – he gave the revolution a lot of momentum before and after January 25, 2011."

Dr. Beltagy stated that he disagrees with Dr. ElBaradei’s opinion that the Constitution must be drafted before the presidential election, praising the opinion of Justice Tariq Al-Bashri who holds that national interest requires that power is transferred through presidential elections, which should usher in a President who represents the people, immediately after Shura Council elections, so the Constitution is drawn up under an elected civilian authority, and not a military one, so that the latter should not act as guardian of state institutions to come.
