Dr. Essam El-Erian, Vice Chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) and Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations at the People’s Assembly (PA), asserted that transfer of power from the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) to civilians is one of the most important ways to support the democratic transition in Egypt.

Earlier, the High Judicial Presidential Elections Commission, headed by Councilor Farouk Sultan, President of the Supreme Constitutional Court, declared that the start of presidential nomination will be on 10 March 2012, and that the general rules necessary for candidates are already set.

In a statement to Ikhwanweb, Dr. El-Erian said, "The very presence of an elected president, an elected parliament and elected local councils will undoubtedly reinforce the process of democratization and the country’s stability".

Dr. El-Erian expressed hope that the upcoming presidential elections in Egypt will be held in an atmosphere of calm.

It is worth mentioning that, in a meeting with Serge Kerbetchenko, Russian Ambassador to Egypt, on 25 December 2011, Dr. Mohamed Morsi, FJP Chairman, stressed that the party was committed to what had been announced by the FJP, that it would not nominate anyone for the presidency, that he fully agreed with the Muslim Brotherhood’s decision which preceded the establishment of the FJP itself, and that the party stands at an equal distance from all current presidential candidates. Dr. Morsi, then, pointed out that the FJP will not endorse any military candidate for the presidency.
