Ghozlan: Decision to Grant Intelligence and Military Police Arrest Powers a Restriction of Freedoms

Dr. Mahmoud Ghozlan, Executive Bureau member of the Muslim Brotherhood, criticized the Minister of Justice’s decision to empower officers and even noncommissioned officers of military intelligence and military police to arrest and detain civilians.

In a statement to Ikhwanweb, Dr. Ghozlan said: "This decision represents a return to emergency law in a new form, and circumvents the recent lifting of the state of emergency, which only started at the beginning of June.

"It is quite possible that this decision is a message from the ruling Military Council to revolutionary and political movements, groups and parties endorsing the presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Morsi. Whatever the motive, tis will lead to restrictions of freedoms."

The decision was published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday, June 13, and is to be enforced from Thursday, June 14, the day the Constitutional Court is to announce its rulings on the political isolation law and the constitutional legality of the Egyptian parliament.
