Mahmoud Hussein: Calls to Block Referendum Process is Plain Political Bankruptcy

Dr. Mahmoud Hussein, Muslim Brotherhood Secretary-General, said that a certain faction wants to impose its opinion by force with no regard to the opinions of others, adding that the consensus achieved after dialogue with President Mohamed Morsi is a positive step.

“Now it’s clear who wants stability for this homeland and believes in democracy, and just who wants the opposite.”

Hussein further stressed that the draft constitution being put to public referendum is the best ever for Egypt, and will certainly achieve stability. He added that some may have strong opinions, even objections; but those must be expressed in an objective manner.

"The constitution was approved by members of the Constituent Assembly (tasked with writing the new constitution), at a time when there was no Islamist majority at all. The most basic principle of democracy is that everyone has the right to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

"Calls to derail or sabotage the referendum using illegal means and to totally ignore popular will are evident signs of utter political bankruptcy. We strongly reject lies, false accusations and the use of force. We seek progress and prosperity for this homeland and real renaissance in all fields."
