Egypt Presidency and Shura Council: Parliamentary Elections February 25 in Several Phases

Dr. Yasser Ali, spokesman for the Presidency, said that the procedures for election of the House of Representatives will begin on February 25, according to the terms of Egypt’s new constitution.

In a news conference Wednesday evening at Itehadia Palace, presidential spokesman Ali reminded that the new constitution states that procedures for the election of the new parliament must start within two months after the people’s approval of the constitution.

Separately, Dr. Ahmed Fahmi, Chairman of the Shura Council, said "The House of Representatives election will take place in several stages. Although the election law will be submitted for discussion next week, it will be sent to the Constitutional Court for approval within 10 days".

In the TV program Bila-Hodood (Without Borders) on Al-Jazeera Mubasher (live) Egypt, Fahmi added: "If the Constitutional Court approves the election law, it will be released immediately. No appeals or challenges are allowed following approval by the Constitutional Court. Judicial supervision of elections is guaranteed in accordance with the Constitution and the law."
