Mukhtar Ashri: Shura Council Disbanding Unconstitutional, with Egypt’s New Charter

Mukhtar Ashri, Chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP)’s Legal Committee, affirmed that the Constitutional Court has no choice in the lawsuit against the Shura Council and the Constituent Assembly but to refuse the challenge, after the approval of Egypt’s new constitution.

He pointed that the current Constitution said, ‘The Shura Council shall continue its term, in its current makeup, for a full year from the date of the election of the new House of Representatives’.

Ashri said, "The Constituent Assembly’s role had come to an end, with the new Constitution already written, approved and adopted. The Constitutional Court changed its own composition according to the new charter. Consequently, the court may only refuse the appeal".
