A large number of state security police on Sunday November 5, 2006, stormed and besieged homes of Muslim Brotherhood students from Helwan University, south of Cairo, and detained 30 of them while homes of others are still besieged by central security forces which turned the streets into a battle field in hot pursuit of other MB students who were not in their homes at the time. The security forces went further to detain students’ family members, although the wanted students were in their homes. This is apparently an attempt on the part of the security agencies to use the students‘s family members as a leverage. All the detained students are MB candidates for the Student Union elections in the Faculty of Commerce. Strangely, those students have already been excluded from the election lists by government agencies running the campuses. This act on the part of the security authorities triggered outrage among the students today, even leading to clashes between the students and the security forces which sought to ban them from joining a demonstration staged by other students in the campus in protest of the detentions launched against their colleagues. Secretary General of the University’s Free Student Union Abdul Aziz Mujahed said that these arrests and manhunts are but a message to the MB students to pressure them and their families. He added that the university was supposed to be an arena for activities and free competition rather than a hotbed of arrests and clampdowns, assuring that these security escalations only exist in Egypt” No state in the world detains students who stand as candidates for election within their universities “, he said, assuring that it is a fragile regime that detains candidates for fear of opposition even if it is a student election in a university.
